Fire Foil  Testing

 

Test starts at 11:40 with two infrared heaters 3" from the surface.
After 90 seconds the wood begins to char.  Some smoke
 

Four minutes shows more charring and smoke.  No smoke on Fire Foil side
and back side of plywood not even warm.

Five minutes into the test and smoke is increasing.  No heat
behind the Fire Foil side.

Eight minutes and the wood reaches flash point.
No heat felt on the back side of the Fire Foil.

Over an hour and no burning or smoke on Fire Foil side.  Unprotected side
has burned through.  Back side of Fire Foil side is warm to the touch.
 

Over ninety minutes and no burning, no smoke and the
backside is only warm to the touch.

Obviously this is not a scientific, government funded, laboratory controlled test.  However, it's also obvious that the same  heat that ignites wood in eight minutes can be safely reflected away for over ninety minutes with no gain in temperature after the first twenty minutes.

CONCLUSION
We are not fire experts.  We are however experts at understanding the movement, effects, sources and problems caused by radiant heat.  We have learned that there are only two ways to limit the effects of infrared heat:
1)  Absorb it and deal with the heat gain
2) Reflect it and change the direction
Changing the the direction of infrared heat at the surface of your home into one that is highly reflective is the best insurance against losing your home to fire.
