Hole in ceiling cut directly below center of flashing roof opening
Apply three rings of 25 year silcone sealant to bottom of roof flashing
This is a very important step, go slowly and follow these procedures:
Carefully and slowly work the flashing under the shingles just below center of the opening. This will create a leakproof seal for the life of the roof. This is perhaps the most important stage of the installation and is your best opportunity to do it right the first time. Do not rush this part of the installation.
Again, take your time and work the flashing in under the shingles so the flashing is sealed against the roof deck. Do not cut the underlayment but rather slide the flashing between the shingles and the underlayment paper.
Slide the flashing all the way up against the radial cut of the roof opening, twisting slightly to work it in and spread the sealant. Level the top of the flashing now before you screw it to the roof which is next.
The flashing has pre-drilled holes about 8" apart. I like to use these but also put one or more screws between the factory holes to insure the flashing will never leak. Around the top of the flashing, above the shingles, screw right through the shingles so the head of the screw is securely holding down the flashing to the roof deck, not just the top of the shingles. While the factory does supply hardware including flashing screws there are only six and I find using 2" wood screws every 8" holds better and are easier to drive in using a sliding screw holding tool, a must for this job (see photo above)
There should be excess sealant oozing from around the flashing. This will be the case if one tube of sealant is used per flashing. Do not scrimp on this step as once installed correctly it will never leak if installed in this fashion.
Insert the assembled light pipe (which has all the vertical and longitudinal seams taped and screwed), into the now secure flashing. note the screw heads below the shingles which are securing the flashing to the roof deck.
Install the upper horse hair gasket at this time, prior to cutting the light pipe off, it's much eaiser now than later.
Cut off the excess light pipe with aviation snips, the red ones work well for this.
This is how it should look just prior to installing the dome. Flashing sealed, horse hair in place, light pipe cut off flush with the top of the flashing.
Mount the dome and be sure it's sealed all the way around on and sitting level on the flashing. The dome and flashing have a very tight fit so it's important to keep it going on level as you push it onto the flashing. Tapping lightly in a circle works well. Be sure it's seated all the way around before securing it with the factory supplied stainless steel dome screws.
Finished job is clean, leakproof and will provide free, pure spectrum light inside the home as seen below.
This is the light provided by a 13" tubular skylight in a kitchen.

old RBS Chips in
your hand and within seconds you can feel heat being reflected back to
you. This is low
level infrared
heat changing directions. Now consider what millions of
reflective surfaces over
a
thousand square feet of your attic area could do!
FACT: The only thing that works better than a layer of super reflective
surface is many of them facing each other. This is what gives a
Thermos bottle such excellent performance, and this is only two layers
facing each other.
Keeps heat out during the
summer
and heat in during the winter. "Will it really make a
difference?"
Yes, RBS Chips will make your home more comfortable and more
efficient.
Immediate results, lifetime performance...guaranteed.
If you live in a cold
climate, use RBS Chips in your attic. If you live a warmer
climate, use our latest product: Thermal Control Membrane.
Hold the sample piece
of Thermal Control Membrane (TCM-6), in your hand. Within 3
seconds you will be able to feel your own body heat changing directions
and being reflected back to your hand. Immediate proof of the
performance of this exciting new building insulation product.
USES
Cold climates: Use behind the sheet rock on interior walls and
tape the seams which makes it an effective vapor barrier and a heat
barrier. Cold rooms become warm, hot rooms are comfortable in the
summer. Staple TCM-4R under your crawl space and you will
experience immediate benefits.
Hot climates:
Simply roll out over your existing insulation and start saving!
Lifetime, transferable performance warranty, an industry first, can
only be claimed by the patented design of this new radiant
barrier. Wrap new homes and additions but be
forewarned: You will need to down size the heating and A/C
systems
due to the decreased heat gain and heat loss. At least a
35% reduction minimum. Most cases, on new homes, a 50% reduction
in sizing is typical. Many homes have been built this way and
none compromise comfort for savings. Fact is, our homes are more
comfortable than any other building design due to the interior mean
radiant temperature both winter and summer.
TCM has an
unconditional, no questions asked money back warranty. We'll even
pay for the return shipping! That's how confident we are you
will be not only pleased but surprised by the effects this product will
bring to your project be residential, commercial, industrial or ?
DO YOUR HOMEWORK
You are on the right path if considering using a reflective membrane to
control heat flow. If radiant barrier is a new concept to you,
you are not alone. This is
basic physics as applied to keeping heat from entering or leaving a
room by means of installing a product capable of changing the direction
of infrared heat, not resisting it like fibrous insulation
products. Absolutely the best
method for reducing energy consumption and increasing the comfort of
your home. However, a RBS installed incorrectly can be a
waste of time,
money
and in some cases actually be a move in the wrong
direction. We are here to answer your questions on
how/where/when a radiant barrier should be used. We prefer you
email us your questions and best if you attach a few pictures so we are
on the same page. Phone support is limited but possible if you
really need it.
If
you are here to order a sample of our products welcome. However,
please order a sample of what other
RBS companies are offering, this way you will have a visual and
physical
reference on which product performs the best. How do you tell?
Since
the purpose of RBS is to change the direction of infrared heat by
reflecting
it, doesn't it make sense that the more reflective the surface the more
benefit
the RBS will offer? This is where you will see the difference
between
our Radiant barrier chips and other reflective insulation
products. Another fact of radiant barrier is how many
reflective surfaces does it have? Surfaces that are not laminated
to paper, bubble wrap or film. Two layers of foil have a total of
four reflective surfaces. Laminate both pieces to a
fiberglass scrim mesh for strength and you've just decreased the
potential for performance by 50% through conduction. All of our
patented, high performance RBS products have proprietary air spaces
designed into them.
Further, be sure and ask the other RBS manufacturers what type of
performance warranty they have. All of our RBS products carry a
lifetime, transferable performance warranty. How? Because
we insure it's installed
correctly and not affected by gravity, dust or moisture......ever.
Read
the testimonials of
our
customers and come to your own conclusions. RBS Chips can be used
in
hot and cold climates and is the only RBS that can make that claim.
Testing in 1989 by the Florida Solar Energy
Center showed RBS Chips to reduce energy
consumption 42% over R-19 fiberglass (most likely what you have in your
attic right now). Homes built here in the desert of Phonix
have annual (as in one year), heating and cooling bills that do not
exceed $240. For a
year. This is not possible if using conventional home
insulation products.
